What is the purpose of my life?
Learning how to live your life with purpose can lead to a sense of control, satisfaction, and general contentment. Feeling like what you do is worthwhile is, arguably the most significant factor for a happy life. But what this means is different for each person.
We all wonder what the purpose of our lives is but not everyone takes the time to discover it.
Why are you living?
What is the purpose of my life? Am I living the life I am meant to lead or am I just aimlessly going through life? Sooner or later we all have to face these questions in life and they are not the easiest ones to answer… Today you are challenged to think about your life and your future.
The process of discovering your purpose is one that requires plenty of self-reflection, listening to others, and finding where your true passions lay. The dictionary defines “purpose” as the reason for which something exists or is done, made or used. In his writing, “A Path to Purpose”, William Damon defines “purpose” as a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is at the same time meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.
Why is purpose important?
At some point in your school or work life there may come a time when you must ask yourself ‘why am I doing this?’ Working for the sole purpose of earning a living, or for achieving personal gain, often fails to provide fulfillment. Purpose is important because it helps us in setting life’s goals. A goal exists to serve your purpose, not act as your purpose. Purpose is the driving force behind our actions. It guides the goals that we set. Our purpose usually reflects our values i.e. what do you stand for. To live with purpose
enables us to lead a values-based life. Our most effective actions are often anchored in our values. Having a purpose also provides us with direction. Being clear on your purpose and the goals required to achieve it makes you virtually unstoppable. This level of clarity helps us connect with like-minded people who can amplify our potential.
Do you have a passion?
Knowing your purpose can lead you to your passion, and being passionate about your goals increases your drive to achieve them. Having meaning behind your actions can make even the dullest aspects of your life feel brighter. Every one is a leader. Purpose plays a big role in one being a leader. Identifying and communicating a shared purpose is an important leadership skill. Those you lead will
contribute more effectively when they feel that they are contributing to something more meaningful than their basic requirements
whether as an individual, family or as a team. Knowing your purpose enables you to live and act with integrity. It becomes easier to behave in accordance with your core values because you know who you are, what you are and why you are performing the role you have chosen.
Dear reader, please note that purpose is expressed in our thoughts, decisions, feelings and actions. A greater sense of purpose shapes us and our lives, meaning we are better able to make an impact around us.
